Aleppo 

  • Aleppo is the ancient city of Syria and an UNESCO world heritage site.
  • This was in news recently for conflict between Syrian and Russian army on one side ISIS on other side. Many civilians were killed in the conflict.

Quetta

  • Quetta is the capital of Balochistan province of Pakistan 
  • It recently faced one of the deadliest terror attacks in the Police Training College by Islamic State militants  in which many people, mostly young cadets, were massacred.


Ankara

  • Ankara is the capital city of Turkey
  • The Russian ambassador to Turkey was killed by a Turkish policeman here.


Kigali

  • Kigali is the capital of Rwanda 
  • Recently a landmark agreement reached by 197 parties on the Kigali amendment to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer was taken  into consideration here.

Greenland 

  • Greenland is the largest island in the world, it lies in northern hemisphere near Arctic Circle.
  • At this place, the Australian scientists have found fossils dating back to staggering 3.7 billion years ago which is much older than the previous record holders.

Ross Sea 

  • The sea lies in Antartica continent. 
  • The largest marine reserve aimed at protecting the pristine wilderness of Antarctica will be created here after which it will be the largest marine protected area in the world.

Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) 

  • It is in Switzerland.
  • It had overtaken Japan’s Seikan tunnel (53.9 kilometers) as the longest rail tunnel (57 Km) in the world.

Pukhrayan

  • It is a railway station about 60 km away from  Kanpur city, UP.
  • The Indore-Patna Express derailed here, more than 140 people died.


Rajmahal Hills/Lalmatia

  • Rajmahal Hills lies to the east in the state of Jharkhand in India.
  • 16 people were killed and several others were trapped here in an coal mine accident.


Haji Ali Dargah

  • Haji Ali shrine is located in the Indian city of Mumbai, Maharashtra.
  • It was was in the news recently after the Dargah Trust agreed that women will be granted access to the sanctum sanctorum on par with men.


Bengaluru

  • Bengaluru is the capital city of Karnataka.
  • According to LaSalle’s City Momentum Index (CMI), Bengaluru was  declared the most dynamic city of the world. It was also in news for mass molestation on the eve of new year.


Harike wetland 

  • Harike wetland is  largest Ramsar Wetland site in northern India near Amritsar, Punjab.
  • Punjab Government has launched country’s first  of its kind bus project at the Harike wetland where travels on land and as well as in water will take place in the same bus. 


Akodara village

  • It is in  Gujarat 
  • It has become India’s first digital village.


Majuli

  • It is a first of its kind river island district in India, situated in the Brahmaputra River, it is a part of Assam state.
  • The Guinness World Records has officially designated it as the largest river island in the world recently.


Khajuraho

  • It is an UNESCO World heritage Site in Madhya Pradesh, famous for Hindu and Jain Temples.
  • The 2016 BRICS Convention on Tourism was organised here to promote intra-regional tourism.The convention has been organised as a precursor to the BRICS Summit held in Goa in October 2016


Singur 

  • This place is in West Bengal. 
  • It made headlines when the physical possession of land was given to farmers quashing the ownership of Tata Nano group.The Supreme Court  bench ruled that the land acquisition process in Singur for the car project was faulty and was not for public purpose.


Vedaranyam

  • This is the coastal city of Tamilnadu 
  • The world's first Genetic Garden of Halophytes (naturally occurring salt-tolerant plants) was inaugurated at this place. This is the first of its kind garden in the world.

Loktak Lake 

  • the lake is in Manipur famous for  Keibul Lamjao National Park which is only  floating  park in India.
  • The lake has been selected recently for conservation by Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate change.


Port Blair

  • Port Blair is the capital of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands 
  • This place will get installed the country's first city-scale battery storage solar power plants of  of 25MW capacity by  NTPC.


Patalganga

  • The place lies  in Raigad district of Maharashtra
  • The  new campus of National Institute of Securities Market (NiSM) was inaugurated here by Prime Minister recently. 



3)Regional 


Sumdo village

  • The village is in Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh 
  • It was in the news after the visit of  Prime Minister Narendra Modi to this village on occasion of his Diwali celebrations with the soldiers.


Himansh

  • It is  glaciological research station in  in the remote region of Spiti, Himachal Pradesh. 
  • It was recently set up by National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research (NCAOR) for undertaking surveys that would digitize the glacier motion and snow cover variations with exceptional precision.


Kashang hydropower project

  • This project is being built on river Kashang which is called the life line of the people of Lippa village of district Kinnaur.
  • National Green Tribunal issued an order to stop the project until gram sabhas of 19 villages clear it due to environment and ecological concerns  


Triund

  • This place is the world famous trekking site located about 20 km away from Dharamshala.
  • Recently it was revealed by a survey that many Illegal constructions are coming up in the area which is posing a great threat to forest land and environment.

Sidhwa

  • Sidhwa is a small village of Banjar Valley of Kullu
  • The village made headlines when an IS sympathiser was arrested from a small church located near the village.


Palampur 

  • Palampur is a small city of district Kangra and it is also the name of an Assembly Constituency in the district.
  • this Assembly Constituency of Kangra district, has became the first e-assembly constituency of the country. The city has also become the first fully Wi Fi city of Himachal Pradesh.

Bindrabani 

  • Situated on the left bank of river Beas, the place is about 6 km from Mandi town
  • A private bus proceeding from Mandi to Kullu-Manali veered off the road at this place, and plunged into the Beas river more than 18 passengers were killed. 


Rampur

  • Rampur is a small town located on the bank of Satluj river.
  • Four Nepalese workers were buried alive under the debris after a land slide near Purna village in Kashapat area of Rampur.


Shikari Devi Temple 

  • Dedicated to goddess shikari, the temple lies in Janjehli sub-division of district Mandi.
  • Two students of NIT Hamirpur were trapped here in an extreme cold and snowy weather conditions. They were found dead after a long rescue operation.


Tangnu Village

  • This village is the part of Rohru sub division district Shimla.
  • 54 houses of this villages gutted into fire recently
